Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was established in 1973 with a vision to become a leader in Education and Research and support the Development of the Northeastern part of Greece, namely Prefecture of East Macedonia and Thrace. DUTH was named "Democritus" after the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who hailed from the town of Abdera in Thrace. The administration of DUTH is headquartered in Komotini, the capital city of the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, but the University operates in all major cities of Thrace, with nine Departments in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupolis and two in Orestiada. Overall, more than 30.000 students are studying currently at DUTH at undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral level.
Within the changing global environment, DUTH continues to aim both at educational and research excellence building upon the challenges and demands of the 21st century; DUTH is constantly seeking to improve the quality of teaching that it offers to the students by introducing and applying modern and effective approaches and methodologies. Additionally, DUTH bases its research strategy upon innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, the new digital era, the growth of large-scale research and the pursuit of financial resources from various agencies both in Greece and abroad.
Internationalisation is inherent part of DUTH Development Strategy, one of its major strategic priorities and, a key factor not only for responding to challenges, changing needs and the rapidly evolving Education and Science frontiers, but also for enhancing the quality of education and research it provides; thus, DUTH constantly strives to maintain high-quality and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships and to establish novel. The ERASMUS program has played since 1996 key role in has successfully supported DUTH’s internationalisation as host and home institution for hundreds of incoming and outgoing students and teaching and administrative staff of DUTH as well as of partners Institutions.

Marirena Grigoriou is Professor of Molecular and Developmental Biology at the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics (DMBG) of Democritus University of Thrace.
Maris Fotis
Fotis Maris is a Professor of Water Management at the Department of Civil Engineering, and Vice-Rector of Finance, Planing and Development of Democritus University of Thrace.
Gavriilidou Zoe
Zoe Gavriilidou is a Professor of Linguistics at the Department of Greek, Vice Rector of Academic Affairs and Student Welfare and President of the Quality Assurance Unit at the Democritus University of Thrace. From November 2013 to November 2017 she was Head of the Department of Greek. From December 2017 to August 2018 she was Dean of the School of Classics and Humanities at Democritus University of Thrace. She graduaded in 1994 from the department of Philology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Kedraka Katerina
Katerina Kedraka is an Associate Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace. She is the Head of the Laboratory of Teaching and Professional Development of BioScientists and of the Postgraduate Program "Didactics of BioSciences" at the Department of MBG.
Kandylaki Agapi
Agapi Kandylaki, is a Professor of Social Work and Multiculturalism in the Dept of Social Work, Democritus University in Thrace. Her research interests focus on diversities, inclusion in education, child protection and preventing and tackling gender violence. She is the Head of the Joint Master Course on “Counseling” (Counselling Psychology, Counselling in Social Work and Counselling in Education) (University of Athens- Department of Preschool Education, Democritus University of Thrace, Dept of Social Work and University of Crete Department of Psychology).
Sakka Despoina
Despina Sakka, Professor in Social Psychology, Dpt of Primary Education, School of Education Studies. She has a thirty-five-year research experience in national or international research programs (total:18) financed by the EEC and the Greek State on issues such as gender identities, ethno-cultural minorities, applied social research and Action Research in marginal populations and/or schools.
Pappa Anna
I studied Psychology at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece). My Master’s degree is in the field of Social Clinical Psychology of addictions and psychosocial problems (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece). I was trained in Systemic Counseling and Psychotherapy. Since 2013 I work as a private psychologist in Komotini (Greece).
Chaita Ioanna
I was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1982, grew up in Thessaloniki, Greece and the past twelve years I have been living in Xanthi, Greece. I studied Psychology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and I was trained in Systemic∕Family Psychotherapy and Counselling. After having worked for several institutions as a psychologist, I decided to start my own private practice in 2015, an ongoing activity till nowadays.
Kaltsidis Christos
Christos is an ICT teacher in secondary education since 2003. He has studied Computer Science and holds a master's degree in Adult Education. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace and his research interests include the adaption of virtual reality in education, university pedagogy, and distance education.
